Coosa Steel Expands Processing with New Robotic Plasma Cutter

Coosa Steel has expanded its processing capabilities with the addition of a BeamCut Systems BC25 robotic plasma cutting system at our Rome, Georgia facility. Built for heavy structural steel and open profiles, the new system gives fabricators another efficient option for processing complex beams and components while reducing the number of separate fabrication steps required downstream.

The BC25 combines a 6-axis robotic system with high-definition plasma cutting technology to perform multiple operations in one continuous automated workflow. Rather than moving material between separate cutting, layout and preparation processes, the system can cut, cope, create holes and slots, perform 3D weld-prep beveling, mark and etch layout information, identify parts and cut components to length within the same process.

For customers, that means more than simply faster cutting. Combining these operations can reduce manual layout and material handling, improve consistency from part to part and deliver components that arrive further along in the fabrication process.

Built for Heavy Structural Steel

The BeamCut BC25 is designed specifically for structural profiles that can be difficult or inefficient to process using traditional methods. Coosa Steel can use the system for I-beams and other beam profiles, HSS, angle, channel, flat bar, T-beams and custom or open structural profiles.

Our processing capabilities include beam profiles up to 30" × 12", HSS and angle up to 12" × 12", channel up to 30" × 12", flat bar up to 30" × 3" and T-beams up to 29" × 12". The system also provides 3D weld-prep beveling up to 52° and material-handling capacity up to 600 pounds per foot, making it well suited for substantial structural components.

A Major Advantage for Stair Stringers

One application where robotic beam processing offers a particularly valuable advantage is stair stringer fabrication.

Stringers often require numerous precisely located cuts, connection points, holes and layout references. Producing those features manually can require significant measuring and layout time, and small inconsistencies can create additional work during fit-up.

With the BC25, Coosa Steel can precisely process the stringer geometry while also etching layout and reference marks directly onto the steel. Those marks can identify component locations and connection points, helping fabricators simplify assembly and reduce manual measuring later in the process.
